The Incredible Health Benefits of Honey

What is Honey?

Honey is a traditional healing agent and has many incredible health benefits, uses, and properties. It is a sweet and viscous fluid made by honeybees from the nectar of flowers. Honey comes in a variety of colors, from almost white down to darker colors such as amber, red, or brown. Honey is an amazing antibacterial substance comprised of sugars like glucose and fructose. It contains minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron, phosphate, and vitamins including B1, B2, C, B6, B5, B3. It also has trace elements like copper, iodine, and zinc as well as amino acids. The types of flowers the bees pollinate determine the nutritional properties, color, and flavor of honey.

You should not feed honey to infants under 12 months of age. Children under 12 months of age run the risk of contracting botulism from eating honey. The spores of the Clostridium botulinum bacteria can be found in honey. When ingested by an infant, the spores grow and the Clostridium botulinum bacteria can release the toxin that causes botulism.

Honey’s Nutritional Profile

Providing 17 grams of carbohydrates and 64 calories per tablespoon, honey is an all-natural sweetener without any added ingredients. Honey also contains a variety of flavonoids and phenolic acids, whose health benefits act as antioxidants, scavenging and eliminating free radicals. In general, darker honey has higher antioxidant content than lighter honey.

Honey from the Bible

Proverbs 16:24

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Proverbs 24:13

My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:

Proverbs 25:16

Hast thou found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

1 Samuel 14:29

Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

Honey from the Spirit of Prophecy (Ellen White)

Is not this remarkable? Has not the Lord blessed? From one of the reports received, we learn that last year seven thousand pounds of honey of the best quality has been made on the school estate. Large quantities of vegetables have been raised, and the sale of the surplus has been a source of considerable revenue to the school. All this is very encouraging to us; for we took the wild land, and helped to bring it to its present fruitful state. To the Lord we ascribe all the praise. {1SM 102.5} (Ellen White, Selected Messages Book 1, page 102, paragraph 5)

I am very sorry to learn that Sister C is not well. I cannot advise any remedy for her cough better than eucalyptus and honey. Into a tumbler of honey put a few drops of the eucalyptus, stir it up well, and take whenever the cough comes on. I have had considerable trouble with my throat, but whenever I use this I overcome the difficulty very quickly. I have to use it only a few times, and the cough is removed. If you will use this prescription, you may be your own physician. If the first trial does not effect a cure, try it again. The best time to take it is before retiring.—Letter 348, 1908 (To a worker). {2SM 300.2} (Ellen White, Selected Messages Book 2, page 300, paragraph 2)

I have already told you the remedy I use when suffering from difficulties with my throat. I take a glass of boiled honey, and into this I put a few drops of eucalyptus oil, stirring it in well. When the cough comes on, I take a teaspoonful of this mixture, and relief comes almost immediately. I have always used this with the best of results. I ask you to use the same remedy when you are troubled with the cough. This prescription may seem so simple that you feel no confidence in it, but I have tried it for a number of years and can highly recommend it. {2SM 301.1} (Ellen White, Selected Messages Book 2, page 301, paragraph 1)

John separated himself from friends, and from the luxuries of life. The simplicity of his dress, a garment woven of camel’s hair, was a standing rebuke to the extravagance and display of the Jewish priests, and of the people generally. His diet, purely vegetable, of locusts and wild honey, was a rebuke to the indulgence of appetite, and the gluttony that everywhere prevailed. The prophet Malachi declares, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers.” Here the prophet describes the character of the work. Those who are to prepare the way for the second coming of Christ, are represented by faithful Elijah, as John came in the spirit of Elijah to prepare the way for Christ’s first advent. {CD 71.1} (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 71, paragraph 1)
