NEWSTART +6: The Nutrition Principle

You can find the main idea of the nutrition principle in what we call the 8 laws of health. Some people reference them with the acronym NEWSTART. There are actually 14 laws of health. There are 8 laws that most people have heard of as well as 6 more ‘hidden’ laws.

NEWSTART + 6 The Fourteen Principles

  1. Nutrition: Eating a healthy diet.
  2. Exercise: Walking every day, outdoors if possible.
  3. Water: Drinking the right amount of water.
  4. Sunshine: Getting sunshine for vitamin D every day, even in the winter.
  5. Temperance: Abstain from the bad, moderation for the good.
  6. Air: Open your windows even in winter.
  7. Rest: Get the right amount of sleep.
  8. Trust in Jesus: Pray, study, and let God.
  9. Dress: Modest dress for health.
  10. Words: Speak softly and kindly, never be vulgar.
  11. Attitude: Don’t pout, express feelings of anger appropriately.
  12. Hygiene: Washing and proper cleanliness.
  13. Service: Helping others.
  14. Posture: Sitting and standing the right way.

IMPORTANCE OF THE NUTRITION PRINCIPLE

The ‘N’ in the NEWSTART program stands for nutrition. Correct nutrition is the basis of good health and recovery. Taking time to understand what constitutes a balanced and nutritious diet and executing a plan on a consistent basis are the keys to success.

The apostle Paul teaches us that our body “…is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20).

Can we live according to God’s Holy Law and disregard the food and drink (nutrition) that we place in our bodily temples?

God’s Original Diet to Man

God, who created man and understands our needs, gave us a diet that best supplies the elements needed for the building of the body. The original diet consists of the following: grains, seeds, legumes, foods containing seeds (tomatoes, cucumbers. etc.), fruits, and nuts.

God later, in Genesis 1:30. added vegetables (herb of the field) to man’s diet after he had sinned. Meat was never intended to be part of man’s diet, but God allowed it under careful restrictions and no blood or fat was to be consumed. Most meat was declared unclean and prohibited. Leviticus 3:17; 17:11-14.

Daniel proved that this original diet was far superior to man’s diet. Daniel 1:5-17.

Summary

The goal of the ‘N’ in the NEWSTART program is to avoid refined foods. Eat foods for suitable intake of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Choose foods that will aid in weight loss and help to heal the body of the damage it has already sustained. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the best, frozen is the next best. Dried food is also acceptable.

Eat two meals a day at least four to five hours apart. Breakfast should be the biggest meal. If you must eat three meals the last should be light and consist of grains and fruit at least four to five hours before bed time.

Fasting once a week can be beneficial for resetting the body and giving your digestive system a rest.

We should educate ourselves, not only to live in harmony with the laws of health, but to teach others the better way… {CG 361.2} (Ellen White, Child Guidance, page 361, paragraph 2).

Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. In case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system. {MH 127.1} (Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, page 127, paragraph 1).
