Do You Know God’s Proven Blueprint for Health?

What is God’s proven blueprint for health?

God’s proven blueprint for health is a collection of guidelines, rules, and principles for mental, physical, and spiritual living as outlined in the Bible and clarified and expanded in Ellen White’s writings. Just like a building needs a blueprint for the builder to successfully complete it, our lives need a blueprint so we may successfully complete them and ultimately join Jesus when he returns again.

The Bible contains many health principles especially in the book of Leviticus. These principles are still relevant today. Even if the detailed instructions are not always there, the principles for healthy living are. The Bible may not specifically mention things like cigarettes, but the principle is there.

1 Corinthians 3:17

If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Ellen White and God’s Blueprint for Health

Ellen White wrote many books and articles in her lifetime, quite a few about health. God revealed to her in more detail, information on how we can live a better life here on earth by following His health principles. As early as 1868 she wrote that meat eating caused cancer and was not safe to eat. In 1899 she said it wouldn’t be long until milk and dairy products would no longer be safe.  She also wrote extensively on God’s Natural Remedies. Science is just now catching up to her writings. New studies supporting what she said in regards to the safety of meat eating and dairy products as well as the rest of God’s Natural Remedies appear in journals now on a regular basis.

The main idea of God’s proven blueprint for health can be summarized in what we call the 8 laws of health. Some people reference them by the acronym NEWSTART. There are actually 14 laws of health the 8 laws that most people have heard of as well as 6 more ‘hidden’ laws. We will get into all 14 laws in detail at a later date, but for now here is the list with a brief description:

NEWSTART + 6

  1. Nutrition: Eating a healthy diet.
  2. Exercise: Walking every day, outdoors if possible.
  3. Water: Drinking the right amount of water.
  4. Sunshine: Getting sunshine for vitamin D every day, even in the winter.
  5. Temperance: Abstain from the bad, moderation for the good.
  6. Air: Open your windows even in winter.
  7. Rest: Get the right amount of sleep.
  8. Trust in Jesus: Pray, study, and let God.
  9. Dress: Modest dress for health.
  10. Words: Speak softly and kindly, never vulgarly.
  11. Attitude: Don’t pout, express feelings of anger appropriately.
  12. Hygiene: Washing and proper cleanliness.
  13. Service: Help others.
  14. Posture: Sitting and standing the right way.

Exodus 15:26

And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

Ellen White Quotes

Many spoil their dispositions by eating improperly. We should be just as careful to learn the lessons of health reform as we are to have our studies perfectly prepared, for the habits that we adopt in this direction are helping to form our characters for the future life. It is possible for one to spoil his spiritual experience by an ill-usage of the stomach. {Letter (Lt) 274, 1908} (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods (CD), page 126), (Mind, Character, and Personality (MCP) Volume 2, Page 617, paragraph 4).

One reason why we do not enjoy more of the blessing of the Lord is, we do not heed the light which He has been pleased to give us in regard to the laws of life and health.—The Review and Herald, May 8, 1883 { CD 16.5} (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 16, paragraph 5)

There is work for us to do—stern, earnest work. All our habits, tastes, and inclinations must be educated in harmony with the laws of life and health. By this means we may secure the very best physical conditions, and have mental clearness to discern between the evil and the good. {CD 28.2} (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 28, paragraph 2). (Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene (CTBH), 25, 1890).

Let it ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienic reform is to secure the highest possible development of mind and soul and body. All the laws of nature—which are the laws of God—are designed for our good. Obedience to them will promote our happiness in this life, and will aid us in a preparation for the life to come. {CD 464.3} (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 464, paragraph 3)
