3 John 2 – Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

…Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. In case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected.” Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system. {MH 127.1} (Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, page 127, paragraph 1).

Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power–these are the true remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of nature’s remedial agencies and how to apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge. {MH 127.2} (Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, page 127, paragraph 1).

We should educate ourselves, not only to live in harmony with the laws of health, but to teach others the better way… {CG 361.2} (Ellen White, Child Guidance, page 361, paragraph 2).

…Become more intelligent in regard to the laws of life. . . .  {11MR 187.3} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 11, page 46, paragraph 1).

Educate in Regard to the Laws of Life

WHY?

…Educate people in the laws of life so that they may know how to preserve health… {MM 259.3} (Ellen White, Medical Ministry, page 259, paragraph 3).

…It is the duty of every person, for his own sake, and for the sake of humanity, to inform himself in regard to the laws of life and conscientiously to obey them… (MH 128.1} (Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, page 128, paragraph 1).

True religion and the laws of health go hand in hand… {7T 137.1} (Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church Volume 7, page 137, paragraph 1).

You are to apply the laws of life and health to your own case. In violating the laws of health, even in doing the service of God, you misrepresent your maker… {KC 20.4} (Ellen White, The Kress Collection, page 20, paragraph 4)

…Put your trust in the Lord.  (Psalm 4:5)

How?

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.  (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Gratitude, rejoicing, benevolence, TRUST IN GOD’S LOVE AND CARE—these are health’s greatest safeguard. {OFC 49.3} (Ellen White, Our Father Cares, page 49, paragraph 3)

…Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity of life, and A FIRM TRUST IN GOD, are remedies for the want of which thousands are dying… {CD 301.2} (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 301, paragraph 2).

How to Trust in God

  • Implicit trust without a murmur or a reproach: …the obedience of Abraham was without a murmur or a reproach. His trust in God was implicit. {4T 253.1} (Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church Volume 4, page 253, paragraph 1).(see Philippians 2:14)  
  • With confidence: Trust in God…with confidence… {PP 554.1} (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, page 554, paragraph 1).
  • Trust on all the promises of God: Trust all on the promises of the Lord… {Pr 38.1} (Ellen White, Prayer, page 38, paragraph 1).
  • Show a firm undeviating trust: We must show a firm, undeviating trust in God… {COL 145.2} (Ellen White, Christ’s Object Lessons, page 38, paragraph 1).
  • Persevere in keeping your requests before God: … little real trust in God…they do not persevere in keeping their requests before the Lord.  {Pr 71.2} (Ellen White, Prayer, page 71, paragraph 2).

The Lord is disappointed when His people place a low estimate upon themselves. He desires His chosen heritage to value themselves according to the price He has placed upon them. God wanted them, else He would not have sent His Son on such an expensive errand to redeem them. He has a use for them, and He is well pleased when they make the very highest demands upon Him, that they may glorify His name. They may expect large things if they have faith in His promises. {DA 668.1} (Ellen White, The Desire of Ages, page 668, paragraph 1).

  • Must combine activity with trust: …there must be activity united with firm trust in God. {CM 146.2} (James 2:17,20) (Ellen White, Colporteur Ministry, page 146, paragraph 2).
  • Dwell upon His power to save: Put your trust in Him…dwell upon His power to save … {2T 319.2} (Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church Volume 2, page 319, paragraph 2).

  • Moving steadily forward in humble dependence upon Him committing to Him ourselves: Putting our trust in God, we are to move steadily forward, doing His work with unselfishness, in humble dependence upon Him, committing to His providence ourselves and all that concerns our present and future, holding the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end, remembering that we receive the blessings of Heaven, not because of our worthiness, but because of Christ’s worthiness and our acceptance, through faith in Him, of God’s abounding grace. {CH 238.1} (Ellen White, Counsels on Health , page 238, paragraph 1).(See Acts 9:6)

Consecrate yourself to God in the morning; make this your very first work….each morning consecrate yourself to God for that day. Surrender all your plans to Him, to be carried out or given up as His providence shall indicate. Thus day by day you may be giving your life into the hands of God… {SC 70.1} (Ellen White, Steps to Christ, page 70, paragraph 1).

  • Study His character: …they have not studied His character…therefore they do not know how to trust… (col 411.1) (Ellen White, Christ’s Object Lessons, page 411, paragraph 1).

It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our confidence in Him will be more constant, our love will be quickened, and we shall be more deeply imbued with His spirit…  {DA3.4}

  • Hold communion with Him: …they have not held communion with Him; therefore they do not know how to trust… (col 411.1) (Ellen White, Christ’s Object Lessons, page 411, paragraph 1). it must be continual communion. {DA 676.1-.2} (Ellen White, The Desire of Ages, page 676, paragraph 1-2).   • Prove His word to Him: …in daily proving Him with His word. Constantly you will be learning how to trust more fully in Christ… {20MR 173.2} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 20, page 173, paragraph 2).

  • Think right thoughts: …trust in Him who is able to save to the uttermost all who come unto Him and will put their trust  in  Him…think right thoughts upon Christ … {ry 147.2} (see 2 Corinthians 10:5)

How often/when should we trust in God?

  • Daily: …trust in God daily… {CHL 48.1} (Ellen White, Christian Leadership, page 48, paragraph 1).
  • Whenever you are hedged about on every side: Such obstacles are permitted by the Lord as a test of faith. When we are hedged about on every side, this is the time above all others to trust in God and in the power of His spirit… {CC 258.3} (Ellen White, Conflict and Courage, page 258, paragraph 3).
  • In times of spiritual darkness: …. Trust God in darkness. That is the time to have faith… {Pr 38.1} (Ellen White, Prayer, page 38, paragraph 1).
  • When your mind is tortured with doubt: …when your mind is tortured with doubt…trust in…the living God… {2MCP 672.4} (Ellen White, Mind, Character and Personality, Vol. 2, page 672, paragraph 4).(Read steps to Christ, what to do with doubt, starting on pg. 105)
  • When thoughts of those things that bring you sadness and distress come into your mind: Put your trust in Him. Think not of those things which bring sadness and distress; turn from every disagreeable thought and think of precious Jesus. Dwell upon His power to save, His undying, matchless love for you… {2t 319.2} (Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church Volume 2, page 319, paragraph 2).
  • In every emergency: trust in God… seek his help in every emergency… {PP 554.1} (See SC 99.4) (Ellen White, Steps to Christ, page 99, paragraph 4).
  • In everything: …God must be made first and last and best in everything….moving carefully and with entire trust   in God… {1SAT 220.1} (Ellen White, Sermons and Talks, Vol. 1, page 220, paragraph 1).

The Blessings of Trusting in God

  • The obstacles of Satan will disappear: …trust in God…the obstacles placed by Satan across the pathway of the Christian will disappear; for the powers of heaven will come to His aid… (cc 258.3} (Ellen White, Conflict and Courage, page 258, paragraph 3).
  • The Lord will manage matters for you: …the Lord has managed matters for you because you have put your trust in Him. {19MR 151.2} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 19, page 151, paragraph 2). (Isaiah 40:4 – He will make our crooked paths straight.)
  • God will go before you preparing the way: …when you put your trust wholly in God, then you will see in every passage of your experience, one going before you preparing the way. {20MR 313.4} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 20, page 51, paragraph 2).
  • The Lord will not forsake you: …the Lord will not forsake you if you will put your trust in Him. {21MR 136.7} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 21, page 136, paragraph 7).
  • You will be a blessing to others: If you put your trust in God, I see great opportunity for you to be a blessing to others… {1888 1464.2} (Ellen White, Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, page 1464, paragraph 2)
  • This will provide your safety: …trust in God…the means provided for their safety… {CTBH 22.2} (Ellen White, Christian Temperance (EGW) and Bible Hygiene, page 22, paragraph 2)
  • He will not leave you to your own: If you go to God for help and wisdom…when you put your trust in Him, and depend upon His counsel, He will not leave you to your own…  {GW92 237.2} (Ellen White, Gospel Workers, pages 237, paragraph 2).

Who Should Put Their Trust in God?

It is the privilege of all…people, to put their trust in the Saviour…Be a humble, trusting child of faith…put your trust in Him. {21MR 136.7} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 21, page 136, paragraph 7).

Why Should We Trust in God?

  • Because God has allowed us to lack nothing: …trust in God and obey His word…thou hast lacked nothing. {pp 424.1} (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, page 424, paragraph 1).
  • Because it is essential for our spiritual warfare: trust in God…essential to the Christian in the spiritual warfare… {pp 554.1} (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, page 554, paragraph 1). armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-17….we must have faith)
  • Because he will make His goodness pass before you: …if you will put your trust in Him, he will make His goodness pass before you… {17MR 84.4} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 17, page 84, paragraph 4).
  • Because He will lead you by His counsel: …if you will put your trust in Him…He will lead you by His counsel.
  • Because it will make you level headed: …you are level headed…because you…put your trust in God… {21MR 183.1} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 21, page 183, paragraph 1).
  • Because you will find the grace needed for every emergency: …by putting his trust in God, He will find the grace of Christ sufficient for every emergency. {LHU 267.2} (Ellen White, Lift Him Up, page 267, paragraph 2)

We should trust in the natural remedies that the Lord has provided for us

Our Saviour…has supplied in the natural world remedies for the ills of man… We can with safety discard the concoctions which man has used in the past. {2SM 289.1} (Ellen White, Selected Messages, Book Two, page 289, paragraph 1).

The Lord has provided antidotes for diseases in simple plants, and these can be used by faith, with no denial of faith; for by using the blessings provided by God for our benefit we are cooperating with Him. He can use water and sunshine and the herbs which He has caused to grow, in healing maladies brought on by indiscretion or accident. We do not manifest a lack of faith when we ask God to bless His remedies.

True faith will thank God for the knowledge of how to use these precious blessings in a way which will restore mental and physical vigor.  {2SM 289.2} (Ellen White, Selected Messages, Book Two, page 289, paragraph 2).

What Shows a Lack of Faith in God?

  • The impatient haste to tear away the veil from the future: this impatient haste to tear away the veil from the future reveals a lack of faith in God… {pp 687.2} (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, page 687, paragraph 2). (see Isaiah 8:19-20)
  • Every failure on Christians’ part: every failure on the part of the children of God is due to their lack of faith… {pp 657.2} (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, page 657, paragraph 2).
  • Refusing to use the remedies God has provided for healing: to refuse the remedies which they may as well have…shows a lack of faith in Him… {MM 262.2} (Ellen White, Medical Ministry, page 262, paragraph 2).
  • Refusing to let the air and sunshine in the home: …to neglect to let into every room in the house God’s pure air and sunshine, shows a lack of faith in Him… {MM 262.2} (Ellen White, Medical Ministry, page 262, paragraph 2).
  • Taking drug medication: …He promises to come to us as a Comforter to bless us. Why do we not believe these promises? That which we lack in faith we make up by the use of drugs. Let us give up the drugs, believing that Jesus does not desire us to be sick, and that if we live according to the principles of health reform, He will keep us well. {19MR 51.2} (Ellen White, Manuscript Releases Volume 19, page 51, paragraph 2).

*** Examine yourself and prove whether or not you are in the faith – if not: Ask God to increase your faith.

Why Read the Word?

  • Hosea 4:6 – God’s people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge
  • Proverbs 2:6 – Knowledge comes from the mouth of God
  • Psalms 119:105 – His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path
  • Psalms 119:9 – helps a person cleanse their way
  • Psalms 119:11 – helps one not to sin against God
  • 2 Peter 1:4 – It gives us promises to help us escape the corruptions in the world
  • John 15:3 – We are clean through the word
  • Psalms 107:20 – We are healed through the word
  • Psalms 107:20 – We are delivered from destruction through the word
  • 1 Peter 1:23 – We are born again through the word (1 Corinthians 15:31 – We are to die daily…which means we need to be born again every day.     
  • John 14:1-3, 14; Revelation 19:13 – Jesus is the Word
  • John 15:1-5 – We are to abide in Jesus and because Psalms 119:89 – God’s word is already settled in heaven.

How Often Should We Read the Word?

  • 1 Corinthians 15:31 – We are to die daily, so we need to be born again daily. We learned that we are born again through the word. (1 Peter 1:23)
  • Matthew 4:4 – every day
  • Job 23:12 – More than our necessary food. It is necessary to eat 2 x day, so more than that would be a minimum of 3 times.

How should our attitude be towards the word of God?

Psalm 40:8 – I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. (Thy word have I hid in my heart.)

Why People Don’t go to the Word and Read it?

John 3:19-21 – Because they don’t want their evil deeds reproved or they are too busy…the cares of this world choke out the word. (Matthew 13:22)

Closing Thoughts

We have a God whose ear is not closed to our petitions…if we prove His word, He will honor our faith… {OHC 133.4} (Ellen White, Our High Calling, page 133, paragraph 4)

…Learn to trust in God. Learn to go to Him who is mighty to save. He knows what you need before you ask Him; but he has made this your duty, and the duty of every one of us, to come to Him and ask Him in confidence for what we need. We must comply with the conditions laid down in His word, namely, “ASK.” Tell the dear Saviour just what you need. He that said…will not reject your prayer. But he will send His angels to guard you and protect you from the evil angels, and will make it easy for you to do right. Then it will be much easier than if you should try in your own strength… {AY 55.1} (Ellen White, Appeal to Youth, page 55, paragraph 1). (See James 4:2) KJV only!!! All others have changed or omitted.

The people of God must move understandingly. They should not be satisfied until every known sin is confessed…God must be served from principle instead of from feeling. Morning and night obtain the victory for yourselves in your own family. Let not your daily labor keep you from this. Take time to pray, and as you pray, believe that God hears you. Have faith mixed with your prayers…Trust all on the promises of the Lord. Trust God in darkness. That is the time to have faith…You do not trust enough in Jesus, precious Jesus.

You do not make His worthiness to be all. The very best you can do will not merit the favor of God. It is Jesus’ worthiness that will save you, His blood that will cleanse you. But you have efforts to make. You must do what you can on your part. Be zealous and repent, then believe. — (1T 167.1) (Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church Volume 1, page 167, paragraph 1). (Philippians 2:12; James 2:17,20)

Study and teach laws of preventive medicine.–there is now positive need…that greater painstaking effort be made to carry forward and upward the work for themselves, and to interestedly instruct those who look to them for medical skill to ascertain the cause of their infirmities. They should call their attention in a special manner to the laws which God has established, which cannot be violated with impunity. They dwell much on the working of disease, but do not, as a general rule, arouse the attention to the laws which must be sacredly and intelligently obeyed, to prevent disease. {MM 223) (Ellen White, Medical Ministry, page 223).
